Immigrant Visa Interview Tips

BEFORE THE INTERVIEW:

  • Review instructions and information sent to you by the Embassy.
  • Double check your Interview appointment date, and set reminders.
  • Review the “Pre-Interview Checklist” provided. Prepare and compile all documents listed.
  • Read the guides and informational sheets provided at least two times to ensure that you do not miss/overlook anything.
  • Review and prepare the following before the interview: all of your paperwork, questions and answers on all forms/documents submitted, and your dates of travel, financial figures, and immigration history.
  • If there are errors on submitted forms, or any corrections that need to be made, be prepared to explain the changes and provide documents confirming the new information, as appropriate.
  • Dress neatly, professionally, and even conservatively. Wear a mask.
  • Do NOT wear T-shirts or jewelry with slogans or symbols that might make the officer wonder about your lifestyle or morals.
  • Do NOT go overboard. i.e. wear a tie covered with American flags, make comments about how great the USA is, how you would be a member of a great society.
  • Friends/relatives/attorneys/business contacts are not permitted to attend the immigrant visa interview of an applicant or intervene on their behalf during the interview.

THE DAY OF THE INTERVIEW:

  • Do NOT arrive more than 15 minutes before appointment time.
  • Once you enter the Consulate/Embassy, give them your appointment letter.
  • Once you are inside, there is no appointment time. You may have to wait beyond your scheduled appointment time as many applicants are scheduled at the same time.
  • Be prepared to spend at least a few hours at the Consulate/Embassy.
  • Sit in the designated area until your name is called.
  • If there is only one case number for the primary applicant and for the spouse, all will be called together for standing in line/prescreening/final interview.
  • First, the primary applicant’s file will be prepared, followed by spouse’s file and the child(ren)’s file(s), if applicable.

THE INTERVIEW:

  • For Family-based visas, the officer will make a determination on the relationship of the Beneficiary to the Petitioner.
  • For Marriage based visas the consular officer will make a bonafide marriage determination.
  • The consular officer’s determination is based upon the beneficiary’s response to the questions as well as evidence proving the relationship. Each consular officer will ask different questions, and some may not request any proof of relationship at all.
  • If the officer is not convinced of the legitimacy of the relationship or the validity of the marriage, he/she will send the file back to the U.S. for investigation.
  • Answer questions truthfully and consistently
  • If you don’t know the answer, say “ I don’t know”.
  • If you are not sure of the answer, “I’m not sure”.
  • Do NOT make something up.
  • Do NOT guess.
  • Do NOT try to engage in unnecessary conversation with the officer make any jokes such as “mail order bride” or other inappropriate subjects.
  • Answer only the questions asked
  • Don’t talk unnecessarily.
  • Be polite and courteous in your interview. Do not argue unnecessarily.
  • If you have a non-immigrant U.S. visas in your passport, it may be “cancelled without prejudice” at the interview. Sometimes they will wait to cancel the non-immigrant visa at the time of the immigrant visa issuance.
  • If there are errors on submitted forms, or any corrections that need to be made, be sure to inform the officer PRIOR to the oath. Be prepared to explain the changes and provide documents confirming the new information, as appropriate.
  • At the end of the interview, you will be asked to raise your hand and take an oath saying everything is correct and there is no fraud, etc.
